The Manitoba Government says there is no clear indication of the scope of the outage affecting tens of thousands of people in the province.
The province said it has no idea how many homes were affected, nor how many people were affected in the last 24 hours.
It is also unclear how many affected homes were connected to the provincial grid, nor whether any people were on the power grid at the time.
There are also questions about what caused the outage, and how quickly it began.
Premier Brian Pallister said Monday evening the province is investigating.
“We will do everything we can to ensure that this is an isolated incident and it is not something that could have occurred in any other circumstance,” Pallister told reporters.
“We are working very closely with our provincial partners.”
The province is also sending crews to remote communities to help restore service.
